Green carnival coming to city

SUSTAINABILITY, CLEAN TECHNOLOGIES EVENT’S FOCUS

- J.W. Schnarr LETHBRIDGE HERALD

Springtime in Lethbridge will see a new sort of green sprouting this year.

Sustainival, the World’s First Green Carnival, will be set up the weekend of May 26-28 at the Enmax Centre.

The carnival features games, attractions and rides powered by renewable energy. It also provides an opportunity for public education celebrating energy literacy, sustainability and clean technologies.

The event is free to attend, though there are fees for some of the rides and games.

One of the main features of the carnival is the Green Beast Eco Challenge, an educational event which transforms the Sustainival midway into a giant live-action board game, where participants compete for prizes in an “Amazing-Race”-style contest of stamina and eco-learning.

The Green Beast Eco Challenge runs every day during Sustainival, and can be entered by purchasing a day pass to the event.

Other events planned for Sustainival include a Drift Trike Track, shopping in the Green Marketplace, free-to-play educational games, a free stilt-walking workshop, as well as snacks and refreshments.

Sustainival has run for a number of years in the Fort McMurray area. The 2016 event drew more than 20,000 attendees, or about 25 per cent of the regional population.

The success of the event in Fort McMurray has allowed Sustainival Alberta, an Alberta-based not-for-profit, with the support of the City of Lethbridge and other local organizations and businesses, to hold an event in the city.

Since 2011, more than 1.5 million festival-goers have attended Sustainival, while gaining a handson awareness of the potential of clean technologies and renewable energy.
