Pronghorns add three recruits
TRIO ADDED AS NEWCOMERS FOR WOMEN’S HOCKEY TEAM
The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s hockey team has added a trio of players who have represented their respective provinces last year at the National U18 women’s hockey championships.
Joining the Pronghorns next season are Allison Borrow and Ashley McCabe, who represented British Columbia, and Eryn Johanson from Saskatchewan.
Both Borrow and McCabe were members of British Columbia’s bronze medal team at the U18 Championships this past fall in Regina, beating Ontario Red 5-3 in the bronze medal game.
Borrow, a five-foot-eight forward, had one goal and one assist at the U18 Championships and plays at the Okanagan Hockey Academy in the Canadian Sports School Hockey League.
The Clearwater, B.C. product helped OHA to a first-place finish in the Female Prep regular season standings, contributing six goals and seven assists in 20 games.
In six playoff games, Borrow scored a goal and an assist, including an empty-net goal in the championship game to seal OHA’s 3-1 win over the Pursuit of Excellence.
A teammate of Borrow’s at the U18 Championships, McCabe, a Lillooet, B.C. product, joins the Pronghorns after playing this past season with the Shawnigan Lake School in the Female Varsity Division in the CSSHL.
At the U18 Championships, the fivefoot-six forward posted one assist in five games and during the season with Shawnigan Lake, McCabe scored 10 goals and added 11 assists to help Shawnigan Lake to a second-place finish just behind Delta Hockey Academy.
In the post-season tournament she tied for second in team scoring with three goals and three assists in five games, as Shawnigan Lake fell 3-1 in the championship game to Delta.
Johanson, a defenceman, comes to the university after representing Saskatchewan at the U18 Championships, where Saskatchewan finished sixth.
The five-foot-five product of Stockholm, Sask. is also a product of the Melville Prairie Fire program that plays in the Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League.
Last season, Johanson was named a SFMAAHL second team all-star and recorded four goals and seven assists in 27 regular season games.
In seven playoff games, Johanson picked up one assist, as the Prairie Fire lost to the eventual Saskatchewan champion Prince Albert Northern Bears.
The addition of Borrow, McCabe and Johanson increases the 2017-18 recruiting class to five with previous announcements of local product Kyra Greig and Surrey, B.C. product Alicia Perez.
