Recycling businesses to have their say

A consultation committee that met with some private recycling companies to discuss opportunities once residential curbside collection is implemented citywide will share results at today’s city council meeting.
City Council approved the Residential Curbside Recycling Program in November 2016. Council approved a pilot “blue bin” program to commence in 2018, with full bi-weekly implementation in 2019.
They further directed that a committee be established to meet with the private recycling collection sector to explore opportunities to participate. Three meetings were held between January and February 2017.
Rainbow and transgender sidewalks will be back on council’s agenda today. The Lethbridge Pride Fest Society came before council two weeks ago requesting two permanent crosswalks — one rainbow LGBTQ+ flag and one transgender flag — across 3 Avenue at 6 Street South.
One project up for discussion in the next Capital Improvement Program, however, is the reconstruction of 3 Avenue. Council postponed any decision to allow city planners to discuss with the Pride Society on options. Should the 3 Avenue reconstruction be approved in the next CIP, the city is recommending the permanent sidewalks be placed at the 3 Avenue and 7 Street South intersection.
The YWCA Lethbridge and District will request $251,000 from the City of Lethbridge Affordable Housing Fund to complete a Capital Planning Project. The project would assist the YWCA to determine space expansion, supports and services required to meet the growing needs of women and children in Lethbridge.
This week also marks National Volunteer Week. Representatives from Volunteer Lethbridge will request council members participate in a challenge to give 150 hours of volunteer time in celebration of Canada’s 150th Anniversary. They will also ask for council attendance at the Leaders of Tomorrow Youth Volunteer Recognition, to be held on Wednesday.
Also on the agenda, producers of a local film, “Lockdown,” to be filmed this summer in Lethbridge, will request a letter of support for their grant application to the Canada Council for the Arts.
The Heart of Our City Committee will also report on results achieved through two incentive projects: the Housing Incentive Program and the Activity Grant.
A bylaw to adopt a consistent municipal naming and addressing system will be up for final reading. Part of the bylaw addresses requirements for property owners on the display of addresses. One of the potential requirements includes the display of street address numbers not only on the front of their buildings, but also the rear or lane side, if the property abuts a lane. If approved, this would be required for all new and existing residential, commercial, and industrial properties with a 24-month compliance period.
A public hearing is scheduled at 4 p.m. to discuss a land-use reclassification bylaw for a portion of land in the Victoria Park neighbourhood.
The regular meeting, open to all, begins at 1:30 p.m. in council chambers at City Hall.
