Kainai Golden Chiefs win pair of titles
The Kainai Golden Chiefs hockey team recently scored a pair of championships in as many weekends.
They were in Calgary last weekend, where the team of seven and eight-yearolds won the Alberta Treaty Hockey Championships in a wild shootout.
The previous weekend, the Golden Chiefs were in Edmonton, where they captured the Alberta Native Hockey provincial title.
In Calgary last weekend, the Golden Chiefs earned a berth in the championship game, where they faced Sarcee.
After regulation time ended in a 4-4 tie, the teams went to a shootout and the Golden Chiefs shooters and goaltender came up big to earn the championship.
After the first Sarcee shooter missed on his attempt, Golden Chiefs Karter Russell found the back of the net to put his team up 1-0 in the shootout.
Then it was Golden Chiefs goaltender Powell Ford’s turn to come up big, turning aside a Sarcee attempt, setting up Golden Chiefs Aiden Across the Mountain for the game and championship-winning goal.
The previous weekend, the Golden Chiefs were in Edmonton for the Alberta Native Hockey Provincials where they blanked Sunchild 11-0 in the final.
