Canadian rinks in world senior finals

FINALS SET FOR TODAY AT 10 A.M. AND 2 P.M.

Canada’s men’s and women’s rinks will play for gold today at the World Senior Curling Championsh­ips at the ATB Centre Lethbridge Curling Club.

The Canadian men, which includes skip Bryan Cochrane, third Ian MacAulay, second Doug Johnston and lead Ken Sullivan, will play Sweden’s Mats Wranaa in the gold medal game today at 2 p.m.

On the women’s side, Canada’s Colleen Jones rink of third Kim Kelly, second Mary Sue Radford and lead Nancy Delahunt will battle Cristina Lestander of Switzerlan­d in the title game today at 10 a.m.

In the bronze medal games, Scotland and the United States will meet on the women’s side and Ireland and Germany will go head-to-head on the men’s side.

The two women’s medal contests will both be at 10 a.m. with the two men’s finals to follow at 2 p.m.

On Friday, Canada’s women remained unbeaten as they beat defending champion Scotland 5-3 in the semifinals.

The score was tied 3-3 as the teams played the seventh end which Canada blanked.

In the eighth end, Scotland skip Jackie Lockhart was just wide with her last-stone draw attempt, to give Canada two more points for the 5-3 win, without Jones having to play her last stone.

In the other semifinal, the U.S. rallied with three in the seventh end and then steal one in the eighth end to force an extra end. But, in the extra end scored three for an 8-5 win.

On the men’s side, in the semifinals, Canada opened with two in the first end against Ireland and were always in control. Two single-point steals by the Canadians added to their score and Ireland conceded after the seventh end, with the score 5-2 for Canada.

The other semi between Sweden and Germany was much closer in the first few ends, before Sweden scored two points in each of the fifth and seventh ends to emerged with a 7-3 victory.
