Alice gets a new look

CHINOOK HIGH SCHOOL OFFERS PERFORMANCES THIS WEEK

- Garrett Simmons

Putting on a dance production at Chinook is a complete schoolwide effort. This week, Chinook High School’s Media Centre will show off the results of those efforts, as the spring dance show, Alice, is set to run at 7 p.m. each night from Tuesday to Thursday.

“It’s a fantastical journey following Alice through Wonderland,” said Alisha Hornberger, who teaches dance at Chinook. “What we’ve done is we’ve taken the story of Alice in Wonderland and we’ve interpreted it through dance and movement, so it’s a pretty exciting show.”

She added the production is the end result of a ton of collaboration between students at the school and members of the community.

“There’s about 60 students who were involved, and what we did is we’ve been working with a group of student choreographers and a committee,” Hornberger said.

“At the very beginning, we started with the idea of Alice in Wonderland and then we spent hours planning, going through the story and then figuring out how we could represent each section of the story through movement and dance.”

But that’s not where the collaboration ended.

“We also have our dance classes in school that are participating and are adding five numbers to the show,” said Hornberger. “We had a group of students who also collaborated with the fashion students at Chinook and we created all the costumes you will see next week.”

Hornberger’s Dance 15 class created the tea cups for the show, while many other classes contributed by creating many other Alice-related props. All of those efforts, combined with the actual rehearsals for the show, have meant hours upon hours of preparation.

“It’s been amazing. Working with students, I’m always impressed by their dedication and their work ethic. They’ve worked really hard to get to where we are today.”

Hornberger added months of work has taught students about dance and choreography, how to work with others, the amount of backstage work involved in putting on a show and how much time can be spent on costuming.

Tickets for the show can be purchased on School Cash Online: (https://lethbridge.schoolcash online.com/Fee/Details/5308/ 38/False/True) or by stopping by Chinook and visiting the Textbook Centre.
