Sports hall ready for inductions

The Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame is preparing to host its 32nd Banquet and Induction Ceremony May 6 at the Canadian Western Bank Lounge at Enmax Centre.

This year’s theme is “Celebratin­g 60 Years of Athletics at Lethbridge College” and will feature guest speaker Todd Caughlin (Lethbridge College athletics manager) and master of ceremonies Paul Kingsmith.

This year’s inductees are the 1985 Lethbridge Senior Little League Baseball Team (team), Mike Mezei, golf and Stacy Roest, hockey (athletes), Morgan Munroe, multisport (builder), and Knud Petersen, multi-sport (special).

Receiving this year’s Kinsmen Sports Persons of the year are: Ashley Steacy, 2016 Rio Olympic Bronze medallist in Rugby Sevens and Zack McAllister, 2016 Rio Paralympic Games Swimmer.

Zack McAllister 2017 Kinsmen Male Sports Person of the Year

At the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, Lethbridge’s Zack McAllister made the finals in both the 100m and 50m freestyle, finishing seventh and eighth, respective­ly.

He also contribute­d to a Canadian record in the 4×100m medley relay team event, which finished seventh. At the 2016 Canadian Paralympic Trials, McAllister won the 100m freestyle, setting a new Canadian/Americas record

In 2015, he won three individual and two relay medals at the Toronto Parapan Am Games, winning gold in the 50m freestyle, breaking his own Canadian record setting an Americas record and winning silver in the 400m and 100m freestyle events.

McAllister was also part of both the 4×100m freestyle and medley relay teams that won silver.

Also in 2015, McAllister swam three individual and two relay events at the 2015 IPC Swimming World Championsh­ips in Glasgow, Scotland where he finished sixth in the 100m freestyle.

He was a member of the 4×100m medley relay team that set a Canadian record.

At the 2015 Speedo Can Am Paraswimmi­ng Championsh­ips, McAllister won the 50m and 100m freestyle and was third in the 400m freestyle.

At his first Paralympic Games in 2012, McAllister competed in four events, the 400m freestyle, the 200m individual medley and the 50m and 100m freestyle.

Among his highlights were a sixth in the 400m and 10th in the 100m freestyle, which set Canadian and Pan Am records in both races.

He was the first University of Lethbridge swimmer to make an Olympic or Paralympic team in the school’s now 50-year history.
