A hometown hero with a lot of heart will be awarded a Key to the City at today’s city council meeting.

Tyler Wong, former captain of the Lethbridge Hurricanes, will be presented the honour by Mayor Chris Spearman.

Wong played his entire five-year Western Hockey League career as a member of the Hurricanes. He was recently named the 2017 winner of the Doug Wickenheiser Memorial Trophy as the league’s Humanitarian of the Year.

The Key to the City is considered a municipal government’s highest honour and is given to recognize the outstanding civic contributions of each recipient.

The issue of whether to install permanent rainbow and transgender crosswalks, and who should pay for it, is also back on the agenda. A decision has been postponed twice on the proposal made by the Lethbridge Pride Society to install two permanent crosswalks across 3rd Avenue South.

The city’s Waste and Recycling Services department will provide an update on the implementation of the Industrial, Commercial and Institutional, and Construction and Demolition Waste Diversion strategy.

Council will also hear highlights of the 2016 Annual Report presented by the Galt Museum & Archives, as well as updates from the first year of the Major Community Event Hosting Grant and the Annual Outcomes Report for 50 years of Family and Community Support Services.

An implementation strategy for a Lethbridge Destination Management Organization will also be presented. The purpose of creating the new LDMO entity is to transition local visitor functions and services currently provided by the Chinook Country Tourist Association, Economic Development Lethbridge and Lethbridge Sport Council to one single destination management organization.
