Students at G.S. Lakie Middle School will pay tribute to one of the most iconic and beloved rock bands of all time.

About 160 musicians, singers and dancers will perform “The Beatles Strawberry Fields” in the school’s musical revue next week.

They’ve been running musical revues bi-yearly over the past eight years, featuring a variety of artists. This year the school decided to change their format and dedicate the entire show to the music of The Beatles.

“It seems like everybody, they find The Beatles at some point in their life,” said Sheldon Arvay, Lakie’s guitar and popular music instructor. “And their songs are legendary and many people love The Beatles. We thought it would work perfect for this age group of students.”

They will be covering a variety of the band’s hits, as well as some lesser known songs.

“We’ll have the ‘Hey Jude’ and ‘Let it Be’ but there will be some other songs like ‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds’ and ‘Come Together.’ We picked a well-rounded repertoire of Beatles songs for the show,” said Arvay.

Along with the energetic musical production, it will also be an educational experience for the entire student body at G.S. Lakie. Powerpoint presentations have been created for every home room class to learn about The Beatles, their music and the historical perspective of the time it was created.

“Then when they come to the show next week, they’ll have an understanding of what they’re seeing in the show,” said Arvay. “That will add an appreciation for the music of The Beatles.”

Six different video screens will be incorporated throughout the performances. The audience will be treated to a historical perspective of The Beatles’ early days and the British Invasion, right to the end when the group broke up.

“The Beatles Strawberry Fields” will run Monday through Thursday in the G.S. Lakie convertible theatre at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $10, available at the school (403-327-3465) or on their website.
