Child pornography case adjourned again
LAWYER OF DWAYNE SCHNELL NEEDS TO REVIEW IMAGES PROVIDED BY THE CROWN
Child pornography charges against a Lethbridge teacher have been adjourned again while defence continues to review information on the case.
Lethbridge lawyer Greg White told court Friday that while he has received all of the disclosure, he still needs to look at images provided by the Crown.
Dwayne Evan Schnell, who taught math and science to students in Grades 7 to 12 at Ecole La Verendrye, a Lethbridge French Language school, is charged with possessing, accessing and distributing child pornography.
He was arrested Feb. 22 by members of ICE, the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team's Internet Child Exploitation unit.
Authorities began an investigation in January after ICE received information from the United States National Center for Missing and Exploited Children relating to interactions a man had with underage children on an undisclosed social media platform.
Schnell, 37, was released from custody Feb. 24 on $3,000 no-cash bail and several conditions, including that he live with his parents in Calgary and not have any contact with children under the age of 16. He is allowed to be with his own children, however, as long as he is with his wife or parents.
He was also ordered not to use the internet or possess any computer or device that has access to the internet, and not to have any device capable of taking pictures or videos.
He is prohibited from going to playgrounds, schoolyards, daycares, swimming pools or community centres where children are or likely to be present.
He is also prohibited from having a job or volunteering that would put him in a position of trust or authority over anyone under the age of 16.
The case is scheduled to be back in court June 28.
