Indian Hill in line for upgrades

- J.W. Schnarr LETHBRIDGE HERALD

The Indian Hill Golf Course and Campground south of Coaldale is getting a facelift after receiving a grant from the provincial government.

On Friday, Little Bow MLA Dave Schneider was on hand to deliver a cheque for $85,606 through the Community Facilities Enhancement Program.

“Our golf course was built by volunteers and local farmers from the area — most of whom are still around here,” said Christine Knaus, secretary for the golf course. She said this year is the first year the course has received the grant.

This fall, the organization will be hosting a Founder’s Day fundraiser in memory and based on all the founders who built the golf course. It is hoped the event will provide the matching funds necessary for the grant.

Knaus said the total amount of more than $165,000 will be used for upgrades on the course and campground.

“They are definitely needed,” she said. “Nothing has been upgraded since the 1970s, so it’s long overdue.”

Schneider said the facility plays an important role in the surrounding communities.

“Some would consider this to be a bit of an out-of-the-way golf course, but boy, it’s beautiful when you get here,” he said. “And it services more than 500 members coming from everywhere.

‘There is really a great bunch of people who work here and run the place.

“These facility enhancement grants are great.”

The golf course has been a hub for the Readymade and Coaldale communities since the 1970s.

The first tournament held at the course included a hunting tent which was used for a clubhouse. As the years went on, more development was added and the course was built up.

“This is just a great little hub of a community in southern Alberta where everybody comes out and camps, and gets together,” said Knaus. “It’s pretty important.”
