Workplace fatality victim remembered as a hard worker
A former employer of the man killed in a tragic workplace accident last week says he was a hard worker who always had a smile on his face.
Jesse Jessop, 26, was killed Friday after a large concrete wall toppled down on him, blown over by the wind. The accident happened around 4:30 p.m. in the 100 block of Stonecrest Point West. Lethbridge Emergency Services transported Jessop to hospital in critical condition where he succumbed to his injuries.
Alberta Occupational Health and Safety is investigating the incident.
Jessop worked for Maverick Concrete Ltd. for seven years before moving on to work for another business last November. Adam Schweitzer, his former manager at Maverick, describes Jessop as “a true professional.”
“He was a great employee of ours. He was exceptionally hard working and showed up every day with a smile on his face. No job too big or small, he was willing to do it. He took pride in his work.”
Schweitzer said it was a “tough pill to swallow” when Jessop left the company because he was so talented, but they wished him the best.
“If we could have everybody work as hard as him, jobs would get done a lot easier and faster. His quality of work was great.”
According to Environment Canada, winds were gusting up to 58 km/h on Friday, when the wall was blown over on Jessop.
“It’s easy to point fingers, and at the end of the day it was a tragedy,” said Schweitzer. “We are extremely sad for him, his family and his friends. He was a pleasure to have when he did work for us. Just hardworking, kind and thoughtful. He took pride in every job he did.”
