Trump should love his neighbours

LETTERS

Never in the history of our Canadian elections have you heard of candidates that run down women as was the case between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton in the U.S. election debate. Why did the American people vote for such a bully? Were they looking for change? Assuming the Russian scandal is true, it appears they hacked Clinton’s email and prevented her from winning the election.

I feel that President Trump cannot go it alone and drop Canada and Mexico from the NAFTA agreement. Before making any changes he must give the free-trading countries involved six months’ notice. Now he is speaking of massive changes, not just tweaks.

He is the only president that has ever bragged about his Executive Orders and showed his signature on TV. I believe he isn’t a politician but a businessman. He isn’t allowed to fire anyone when he doesn’t like them. Why are the Republicans not doing anything about the way he runs the government? Since he took office he hasn’t done anything but fight with China, NATO and other countries. He should be diplomatic and show respect for all world leaders. The media should be invited into the White House. What secret is he hiding from the American people?

I believe the reason he hasn’t visited Ottawa as the first one on the agenda is because he had all the intentions to break up the trade deal, to prove that protectionism will exist. He cannot do it alone; there are 35 states that trade with Canada. We all need each other, Canada, Mexico and the U.S. — the “Three Amigos.” Did you know that the population is 321.1 million in the U.S. compared to approximately 37 million in Canada? This is reflected in the fact that the U.S. imports $635 billion compared to CAD$322 billion that Canada imports. President Trump cannot run his country alone, he needs NAFTA. When we listen to the news, the U.S. is always having bad weather, flooding and forest fires. What is Trump going to use to build his country?

There is one aspect I like about President Trump — he is anti-abortion and doesn’t support charities for this reason. When he visited Rome, Pope Francis showed him compassion, fairness, mercy and love of his neighbour, as an example of how to treat each other.
