BULLS WIN IN SWIFT CURRENT, HOST MEDICINE HAT TONIGHT

- Dale Woodard LETHBRIDGE HERALD

In the battle between undefeated division leaders, the Lethbridge Bulls prevailed.

The Bulls doubled the Swift Current 57s 4-2 in Western Major Baseball League play Wednesday night in Swift Current.

With the win, the Bulls not only improve to 6-0 on the season to remain atop the Western Division, but hand the Eastern Divisionleading 57s (4-1) their first loss.

In Wednesday’s road win, the Bulls did all their damage with a four-run third.

Swift Current pulled within two in the bottom of the ninth on a leadoff home run from Keil Krumwiede, but Bulls closer Chris Stodolka settled in the rest of the way to earn his third save of the season Greg Hollman worked seven innings for his second win.

After two scoreless innings, the Bulls put up all the runs they needed in the third thanks to a two-out rally.

Dylan Flasch singled to right field, moved to second on a hit from Ryan Pouwells and scored on a double from Carter Witbeck for a 1-0 lead.

After Alex Bishop was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Brock Frentzel cleared the bags with a double for a 4-0 lead.

Swift Current answered back in their half of the third when Matt Bondarchuk advanced to first on a fielder’s choice and scored on a Riley Campbell triple.

That’s the way it stayed until the ninth, but the 57s threatened in the seventh inning.

Swift Current put runners on the corners with one out as Cole Thibideau singled and advanced to third on a single from Matt Bondarchuk.

But Hollman was able to pitch out of it with a fly out and a groundout to keep Lethbridge’s 4-1 lead intact.

After Hollman went seven innings, Dawson Moser came on to pitch in the eighth and gave up one hit before Stodolka came on in the ninth to close it out.

He was greeted with a solo shot from Krumwiede, but managed to close it out for the save. The 57s outhit the Bulls 10-7. Witbeck and Frentzel had the sole multi-hit games for Lethbridge.

Witbeck was 2-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI, while Frentzel was 2-for-3 with three RBI.

Witbeck and Frentzel’s doubles were their third of the season as they increased their RBI totals this season to eight and seven, respectively.

Hollman gave up one run on seven hits, striking out seven and giving up no walks.

The Bulls return to Spitz Stadium tonight when the Medicine Hat Mavericks visit in the rematch of Monday night’s game when the Bulls won 8-2 in Medicine Hat.

Tonight’s game is the first of three in row at home as the Bulls host the Regina Red Sox Friday and Saturday at 7:05 p.m.

First-year Bulls’ infielder Bishop earned the WMBL Player of the Week award for the opening week of the season. The product of Calgary, who attended the University of Texas in Tyler, hit .412 with two doubles and three home runs while driving in nine runs.
