Rain washes away Bulls-Mavs game

Rain and lightning stop WMBL game at Spitz Stadium after one inning

- Dale Woodard LETHBRIDGE HERALD

The Lethbridge Bulls and Medicine Hat Mavericks got in an inning-and-half of baseball Thursday night before Mother Nature intervened with a vengeance.

In a rematch of Monday’s win in Medcine Hat, the Bulls played host to the Mavericks in Western Major Baseball League action at Spitz Stadium.

But after Medicine Hat opened a 1-0 lead after the first inning, some nearby lightning strikes forced the players off the field before the skies opened back up after a one-hour rain delay to start the game.

Shortly after getting the tarp back on the field, a sideways rain pelted Spitz Stadium along with the light show overhead to force the offical rainout.

Before the rain fell, it was the visitors that did a little damage on the board as the Mavs loaded the bases with none out to start the first.

Louie Canjura reached on an error to second base, Blake Rowlett walked and Caleb Longley smacked a single to right field before Frank Podkul hit into a double play, scoring Canjura for a quick 1-0 Medicine Hat lead.

Medicine Hat’s Tanner Helms singled to centre to lead off the second inning, reached second on a passed ball and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Rock Jordan. But the overhead lightning forced the players off the field before the eventual rainout.

The Bulls, 6-0 after Wednesday night’s win in Swift Current over the 57s, are back in action tonight when they host the Regina Red Sox at 7:05 at Spitz Stadium and again Saturday, also at 7:05 p.m.

The Mavericks return home to Athletic Park tonight when they take on the Edmonton Prospects at 7:05 p.m.
