Live racing back tonight at RMTC

- ROCKY MOUNTAIN TURF CLUB

Tonight kicks off a huge weekend of horse racing at the Rocky Mountain Turf Club. All together there are 22 live races, with six tonight, post time 6 p.m. — and eight each day, Saturday and Sunday, post time 1:15 p.m.

In addition to live racing, the third leg of the Triple Crown is on Saturday right after live racing. This race is unique in that neither the winner of the Kentucky Derby or the Preakness are running in it. This race is wide open and should be an absolute thriller. You can watch and wager inside at Bully’s Sports and Entertainment Centre.

You can also partake in Sip and Paint, something new that Rose Rossi is bringing to the track. Go online to paintnite.com and click on the 30 per cent discount button and enter code Merlot30. After that, come out to RMTC where you can sip, paint on canvas and watch horses run. Should be a lot of fun.

On Saturday, the Paint Stake race is one of the highlights in the eightrace day. The Paint Stake will feature horses from trainers such as Laurie Ferguson, Bucky Stockwell and Janice Sather and is destined to be pure speed, beauty and grace all rolled into one thrilling race. Saturday also features an allowance race with such great veterans as Dubla Gold and Careless Hunter, along with newcomer Nthpreznzofgraynes, owned and trained by Jaqueline Smith, a solid horse who last raced at Golden Gate Park in San Fransisco.

Sunday starts with the best 12 three-year-old quarterhorses on the track with the first two races being the All Canadian Derby Trials. Trainers such as William Leech, Donalda Cochrane and Tom Kenway show off their prized three-year olds in a battle of speed. The fastest eight will move on. Keep an eye out for the eighth race with a full field of eight horses, with a distance of 51/2 furlongs and a $4,000 tag. This will be an extremely competitive race with the likes of Laurie Fergson’s, “Boozin Time,” along with William Leech’s, “Naomi’s Gift” and Harold Burbank’s, “Just Zoom will Do.”

If you’ve ever thought to yourself that the Parade Marshall at RMTC looks familiar, it’s because it is Terri Landaker. Terri was the leading jockey by far in the Alberta Community Circuit from 1999-2003, before a quarter horse by the name of “Fly on the Run” went down in a race and took Terri with him. Terri was in an induced coma for 10 days and it took her a couple of years just to walk and talk correctly again.

Terri has shown amazing courage and determination to succeed, as she is now a successful trainer, combined with being the Parade Marshall for RMTC. When you’re at the track, grab a program and check out the complete story on Terri’s amazing comeback. It is truly inspiring to anyone who is on the road to recovery.

As always, Rose Rossi will have her candy scrambles on Saturday and Sunday and the playground is always open. Rocky Mountain Turf Club truly is a family friendly environment with fun for the entire family. See you there.
