Three schools to play for rugby gold

Three South Zone champions will go for gold at the Alberta Schools Athletic Associatio­n Provincial­s today.

At the Tier I provincial­s in Edmonton, the Raymond Comets will get a chance to build on last year’s silver medal when they take on Edmonton Bev Facey Falcons in the gold medal game today at 9 a.m.

In Strathmore at the Tier II provincial­s, the Winston Churchill Griffins team is off to the girls’ championsh­ip following a 2-0 day to kick things off Friday and will clash with Calgary Foothills Composite at 10:30 a.m.

In the Tier III provincial­s in Black Diamond, the Taber W.R. Myers Rebels girls team will look to make it two Alberta titles in as many years as they take on Rimbey Jr/Sr High at 1:30 p.m. today.

In Edmonton, the Comets started the day with a 27-0 win over St. Albert Bellerose Composite and then blanked Edmonton McNally Composite 40-0 in the semifinal to earn a berth in today’s championsh­ip.

The Griffins started the day 27-12 win over Strathmore and then topped Red Deer Hunting Hills in a 19-15 comefrom-behind win.

The Rebels also started the first day at 2-0 thanks to 69-0 and 33-12 wins over Oilfields School and Drayton Valley Frank Maddock High, respective­ly.

In boys Tier II action, the Winston Churchill Bulldogs will play for the bronze medal today.

The Bulldogs started their provincial run with a 43-0 win over St. Joseph, but fell 18-10 to Calgary Henry Wisewood in the semifinal Friday afternoon.

The Bulldogs will now play Sturgeon Composite in the bronze medal game today at noon.

In other Tier I action in Edmonton, the LCI Clippers and Rams also represente­d the South Friday.

On the girls side, the Clippers started the day with a 22-10 loss to Calgary Western Canada, but rebounded Friday afternoon with a 42-5 win over High River Highwood High.

The Clippers will play for fifth place at 9 a.m. today against St. Albert Bellerose Composite.

The Rams were handed a pair of losses Friday with an 18-14 setback to McNally Composite and a 12-7 loss to Calgary Foothills Composite and will play Okotoks Holy Trinity Academy for seventh place at 10:30 a.m. today.

In girls Tier II play Friday, the Chinook Coyotes were 1-1.

The Coyotes lost 14-4 to Sturgeon Composite in their first game, but defeated Lloydminst­er Composite 3814 Friday afternoon to play for fifth place today at 10:30 a.m. against St. Mary’s.

In Tier III girls action, the Vulcan County Central Hawks also went 1-1 Friday and will take on Sexsmith Secondary in the fifth-place game at 10:30 a.m. today.

The Hawks lost 24-12 to Frank Maddock High, but won 41-5 over Oilfields School Friday afternoon.
