LFC draw with Green and Gold
One game above .500 would have looked better in the standings, but it was nonetheless a solid outing for the Lethbridge Football Club mens’s team.
The LFC battled the Edmonton Green and Gold to a 1-1 draw during Alberta Major Soccer League play Saturday afternoon at the Servus Sports Centre.
Lethbridge’s Jaden Veluw scored on a picture-perfect header for a 1-0 LFC lead late in the second half, the LFC came within a minute of improving to 3-2-2 on the season before the Green and Gold struck late, forcing the hosts to settle for the tie and stay at an even 2-2-3.
“We’re 2-2-3, 3-2-2 would better,” said LFC head coach Bruce Primeau. “The team we just tied finished third last year with 22 points, so I’m not disappointed at all. The boys improved immensely from last week. We played almost the full 90 minutes. Last week we had our issues where (in) eight minutes they scored three goals. This week, it was literally one lapse in 90 minutes.” And it came late. “We scored 20 minutes into the second half and we were playing great,” said Primeau. “In the 89th minute and 22 seconds we gave up the equalizer. It was a small mental lapse. I was actually in the midst of subbing in a fifth defender and it was just a little mistake in the back. We almost cleared it off. It hit the post, hit him and went into the net.”
Still, the LFC will still come away with a point thanks to a nicley-drawn up play earlier in the second half.
“Jaden Veluw scored on a header from Stephan Primeau’s set piece. It was brilliant,” said Primeau. “It was a lot of work to keep pressing and attacking and it resulted in us getting a corner. Stephen laid a great ball in and Veluw headed a great goal. Primeau had a great ball from the corner, stuff we’ve been working on with crosses. Jaden had a perfectly timed run and it was a header into the top corner.”
The LFC complete the third of three home games in as many weekends next Saturday when the Edmonton Drillers come calling to the Servus Sports Centre.
The LFC women’s team was off this weekend, but return home next weekend for a pair of games Saturday and Sunday against the Edmonton Victoria and the Red Deer Renegades, respectively.
The women’s team is 2-5 and the coming weekend’s home games wil be their first since May 13.
