Dads enjoy BBQ event

FAMILY CENTRE HOSTS VARIETY OF SUMMER PROGRAMS

It was a flavourful recognition of southern Alberta’s fathers. But the kids were enjoying it even more.

For the second year, the Family Centre hosted a no-charge “community barbecue” Sunday in Galt Gardens. Dads and their children stepped up to enjoy hot dogs and hamburgers, along with root beer and orange-flavoured floats.

They also listened attentively to a Kainai drumming team and watched traditional dances. And they stayed to see dads and other volunteers dropped into a dunk tank, or to join in a variety of games.

The event, said Family Centre spokesperson Kathryn Ponomar, was open to all interested — not just Lethbridge-area children and parents who take part in the organization’s many programs. Not all children have a mom and a dad, she noted; others have two moms or two dads.

“This is for everyone, whatever your family looks like.”

For the dads, one of the attractions was a “show and shine” of motorcycles arranged by member of the Bikers Against Child Abuse. A vintage fire truck brought by the Lethbridge Firefighters’ Charities was also a centre of attention.

Ponomar said the two groups joined members of the Masonic Lodge, the Eastern Star and other volunteers to make the event possible. Local businesses donated the meat and buns, ice cream and beverages.

“Family Centre can’t run this event alone,” she said. An activity grant from the Heart of the City program got planning started.

With the school year ending, Ponomar says, Family Centre is ready to start its summer programs — most of them, free of charge. A “Growing Abilities” dropin program for children with disabilities or developmental delay will begin July 10, followed the next day by “Come Build with Us,” for active children aged two to 12.

“Kids in Action,” aimed at

developing motor skills for kids under seven, will start on July 12. A materials fee will be charged for “Art in the Park,” an instructional program beginning July 13. A “Young Chefs” programs for teens 11 to 14 will also be offered, in collaboration with the Interfaith Kitchen.
