Open house informs public about 3 Avenue reconstruction
RECONSTRUCTION TO FOCUS ON 3 AVENUE BETWEEN 4 AND 8 STREET SOUTH
The City of Lethbridge hosted an open house at Casa this week highlighting the upcoming 3 Avenue South reconstruction project.
Funding was recently approved by city council in the 2018-2027 Capital Improvement Program for the reconstruction of 3 Avenue from 4 Street to 8 Street South, a project which came out of a 2012 Public Realm and Transportation Study.
“We’re going to be moving into detailed design in the next couple of months and starting to work with construction staging plans,” said project manager Craig Richter.
The open house was held to inform the community of the project design and gain feedback from stakeholders.
“We can use that information to develop a construction staging plan that’s actually effective and meets the needs of the community,” said Richter.
Based on the work of past planning studies, the 3 Avenue reconstruction will focus on streetscaping, bringing together elements that lend the street character, with an aim to increase accessibility for pedestrians while still meeting the needs of motorists. The streetscaping approach will look at aspects such as lighting, seating, paving materials and vegetation.
The project also includes plans to upgrade underground infrastructure from Scenic Drive to Stafford Drive, as well as improving access, traffic efficiency and safety for a more vibrant and pedestrian friendly street.
The city will be following up with a second open house sometime in the fall for review of the design and draft construction staging plan.
Construction is expected to begin in 2019 and be completed in 2020. More information on the project can be found at
