LFC settles for a draw

- Dale Woodard LETHBRIDGE HERALD sports@lethbridgeherald.com

In their first home game in over a month the Lethbridge Football Club women’s team came oh-so-close to a win and three points.

The LFC battled the Edmonton Victoria to a 1-1 tie during Alberta Major Soccer League play Saturday afternoon at the Servus Sports Centre.

But as they played on their home field for the first time since their season opener May 13, the LFC were denied the ‘W’ in the last minute as the Victoria struck in the dying seconds to secure a tie as the LFC sits at 3-5-1 on the season.

The tie allowed the Victoria — now 6-0-2 — to avoid their first loss of the season and remain in second in the league.

“I think we controlled the game, pretty much 80 to 90 per cent of it,” said LFC head coach Kayla Wurzer. “There were a few lapses, obviously the last one. There’s not much we can do about it now, but it’s unfortunate. Sometimes it goes that way.”

Naomi Perkins scored the lone LFC goal in Saturday’s tie.

The surrendered late goal on Saturday aside, Wurzer noted a steady improvement from her team.

“I think the girls this year have shown they can play with the best players in this province,” she said. “Every game we keep doing better and every game we keep working better as a team. It’s just going to go up from here, so we’re looking forward to it.”

They’ll continue that progression mostly at home as the season heads into the final month with three of the LFC’s last four games at the Servus Sports Centre, the sole road game is July 5 when the team heads to Calgary to face the Calgary Rapids FC.

“I think everybody felt a little more comfortable because when we travel the numbers are pretty scarce,” said Wurzer. “But when we’re home we never had to worry about our bench. We always have a full bench and we can pick anyone off of it and they can do their job. I think everybody is comfortable and we look forward to having the rest of our home games.”

In the men’s game, the LFC doubled up the Edmonton Drillers 4-2 to improve to 3-2-3 and move into sole possession of third place in the league.
