Henderson Lake Golf Club heads down memory lane

- Dale Woodard LETHBRIDGE HERALD

Alex Murrell can recall a time at the Henderson Lake Golf Club when not all the greens were grass.

On Saturday the one-time president of the Henderson Lake Golf Club was able to take a trip down memory lane as the club held a special ceremony honouring the course’s 100th year of existence in Lethbridge this year.

For Murrell, that meant reflecting on a Henderson Lake Golf Club course that was a tad different when he first arrived on the scene back in 1950.

“I go back a number of years when we built some of the greens, it’s a lot of memories,” said Murrell. “I played a lot with Don Cavers over the years. He was a member and still in school. When I joined it was nine holes grass and nine holes sand greens and we built the 10th, 11th and 12th in the back with the help of all the members. They all contributed.”

Those members from yesteryear were honoured at Saturday’s ceremony with presentations to the club’s members from 50 and 60 years ago.

“It’s nice for the club to put on something like this. It’s really nice for the member and everybody .... and the oldtimers,” said Murrell.

Upon arriving at the club nearly 70 years ago, Murrell, who moved to Lethbridge from Saskatchewan when he was 11, jumped into a variety of roles, including club president in 1969 and 1970.

“I spent about 17 years on the board in different capacities, mainly to do with the golf course,” he said. “It was good, really rewarding.”

On Saturday, Murrell reflected on the progression at Henderson Lake.

“They have definitely come a long way,” he said. “The course is beautiful. I took a ride around with Dean Spriddle and had a look. It’s in beautiful shape, the greens look really good. It improved over the years.”
