Foothills tops LFC

- Dale Woodard LETHBRIDGE HERALD

Asolid finish wasn't quite enough to make up for a so-so start for the Lethbridge Football Club women’s team. The LFC were defeated 3-1 by the Calgary Foothills WFC during Alberta Major Soccer League play Saturday at the Servus Sports Centre.

Kicking off the first of three home games that will wrap up their regular season, the LFC had a late push that resulted in a second half goal from Naomi Perkins, but it wasn’t enough as Calgary struck late for a pair of goals to seal the win that drops the LFC to 3-7-1 on the season.

“I think our issue is we show up in the second half and obviously you can’t do that,” said LFC head coach Kayla Wurzer. “You have to show up at the start of the game and make the first 45 count and I think that’s our issue right now, we’re showing up too late.”

The LFC avoided being shutout when Perkins’ shot found the back of the net midway through the second half.

But despite a few late chances, that was as close as the LFC was able to get.

With two regular season games left on the slate during the last weekend of the month, the goal is to harness the strong second half for the complete game.

“When we do show up it’s fantastic, we show up and knock the ball around and have confidence in each other,” said Wurzer. “We know where each other are and we use it to our advantage. We just need to make sure it’s there for 90 minutes, not 45.”

On the plus side, both of those regular games left are at home as the LFC entertains the Edmonton Scottish Angels July 29 before the Calgary Callies pay a visit the next day.

“I think if we bring the intensity we had in the last 20 minutes, and I think we have to remember we’re on our home field, we should have an advantage,” said Lethbridge’s Erica Augsten. “We know we’re good enough to play. We’re lacking a bit of confidence right off the bat, but we have a good depth of players. It’s that confidence.

“We can picture ourselves here. We have another one in two weeks. It’s the same kind of thing. We just have to prepare better and get everyone’s heads into it a bit earlier (instead) of halfway through the first half. It’s just the little lapses.”
