LFC men earn provincal berth

- Dale Woodard LETHBRIDGE HERALD

At first it looked like more of the same for the Lethbridge Football Club men’s team, and not in a good way.

The LFC doubled up the Calgary Dinosaurs 4-2 during Alberta Major Soccer League action Wednesday night in Calgary to wrap up the regular season at 4-5-5 and, most importantly, clinch a spot in provincials at the beginning on September.

Still, if the first half of Wednesday’s game was any indication, the LFC was facing the recurring theme that had followed them around all season of multiple chances and no goals while their first miscue wound up in the back of their net.

Fortunately for the LFC, with a crucial three points on the line that would send them packing to provincials next month, they came through with three second half goals to earn the win and clinch fifth as Andrew Southern and Nico Pasquotti scored twice each.

“It’s funny because it was our modus operandi,” said LFC head coach Bruce Primeau. “We were all over them for 15 minutes, (there was) a stupid, crazy bounce and the Dinos were up 1-0. It was just a continuation of the Bizarro World we’re playing in this year. We hit a post and have seven chances on net. By the end of the half I think we were outchancing them 13-3 and it was 1-1.”

Heading into the second half, the plan for the LFC was simple, stick with the game plan

“We didn’t change a thing,” said Primeau. “We just kept going at them wave after wave after wave and in the second half we got some of the bounces and it was 2-1, 3-1 and then 4-1. They got one late as we were subbing in our bench.”

With the win, the LFC end their regular season, but get ready for the next one with provincials taking place Sept. 1-4 in Calgary.

“We almost tripled our points, six last year and 17 this year,” said Primeau. “As I said all season, any of those ties could have been a win other than the one loss (5-1 to the Calgary Callies last weekend at the Servus Sports Centre). Any of the others could have been a point or three. We could have just as easily be in the topthree depending on the day.”

Potential outcomes over the course of the regular season aside, the LFC have their spot secured in Calgary in a little over three weeks.

“Once you get to provincials it’s like any sport, just get there and you never know what’s going to happen,” said Primeau.
