Scott Nicholson is not a fan of Miley Cyrus. He was, however, inspired by her video for “Wrecking Ball,” the popular hit song from 2013. One day in June, he got naked and climbed Lethbridge’s wind gauge at the corner of Scenic Drive and Mayor Magrath Drive South and had his friend take a photo.

Nicholson did the daring act so he could submit the photo to Coulee Brew for their #CouleeTrail150 contest on Instagram.

He won — and that picture has now been placed on to beer cans. Since being produced the can has sold out multiple times.

“It’s been a bit overwhelming,” Nicholson said.

“I’ve always kind of wanted to do the photo. I figured this would be the best opportunity to do it. I wanted to have a meaning behind it. I wanted to have a photo of myself on a beer. I didn’t want to half ass it.”

The Coulee Brew contest began in June and continues until Sept. 1. They pick two winners per month to have photos put on to a 32-ounce can called the Coulee Cannon.

They can be ordered as a takeaway beer and filled with anything on tap.

Others have posted similar photos before on social media with various poses on the wind gauge — and Nicholson is well aware of the legalities of his actions. But he planned it out so nobody was around at the time. His friend Dean took the photo.

Nicholson’s wife and kids thought it was funny and he said his mom is actually pretty proud of it.

“She just thought it was silly,” he said. “She’s coming to get herself a beer. She had no shame in mentioning that she’s my mother.”

Nicholson didn’t just enter the contest based on the photo, though. He is a fan of local beer in Lethbridge.

“The history of brewing beer in this city is really rich part of our heritage,” he said. “It’s good to see there’s brewing back in the city. They’re doing rather well.”

Both his can and photo have earned a lot of positive reaction on social media, Nicholson said. Now he wants to challenge others in the #CouleeTrail150 contest.

“I want to see if anyone can top it,” he said.
