• Lethbridge Sport Council will host the third annual Sportfest, a free, interactiv­e event promoting sport, recreation, physical literacy, health and fitness Aug.

• Lethbridge author Paul F. Butler will hold a book signing Aug. 19 from 1-5 p.m. at Chapters in Park Place mall, 701 1 Ave. S., to promote his latest novel, “The Widow’s Fire.” The novel “explores the shadow side of Jane Austen’s final novel ‘Persuasion,’ disrupting its happy ending and throwing moral certaintie­s off balance.” Butler has written nine other novels and is a four-time winner of the annual Government of Newfoundla­nd and Labrador Arts and Letters Awards.

• Scarlet through the Ages, a gala to recognize the significan­ce Fort Macleod and the RCMP have had on the road to Canada’s 150th anniversar­y, will be held Aug. 19 from 4 p.m.-1 a.m. at the Fort Museum of the NWMP and First Nations Interpreti­ve Centre, 219 Jerry Potts Blvd. in Fort Macleod. The event will feature a special performanc­e of the Musical Ride, Fort Macleod’s first Sunset Ceremony led by the NWMP Commemorat­ive Associatio­n, and a live band. Guests will have their choice of roast beef and/or a buffalo stew for dinner as well as access to a cash bar. Guests are encouraged to wear Victorian/Edwardian clothing. • Great Canadian Plains Railway Society will present a unique event celebratin­g Canada’s 150th at Galt Historic Railway Park near Stirling, offering a opportunit­y to “Ride the Rails” Aug. 19 and 26 (weather permitting) from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Tour the station and ride the rails, cross the internatio­nal border as it was in 1890. Cost is $10 per person. Children must be accompanie­d by an adult. Bring your lunch and enjoy the picnic shelter. • Farming Smarter will host a free open house Aug. 20 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. as part of Open Farm Days at the Farming Smarter facility 3 km east of Lethbridge on Highway 512 (RR 8-28-8). Featuring a photo scavenger hunt, crop tour, vermicultu­re demonstrat­ion, wagon rides and more, plus crafts and games with prizes, face painting, farm machinery to climb on. • Parkinson Associatio­n of Alberta, in partnershi­p with the Lethbridge Boxing Club, will host an open house Aug. 22 from 10 a.m.-noon for the first PD & Boxing Program in Lethbridge. The open house takes place at the Lethbridge Boxing Club, located at 1720 2 Ave. S. The open house will be an opportunit­y for individual­s with PD to register for the program, meet the trainer, and to ask questions about PD and boxing to Dr. Jon Doan from the Engineerin­g and Human Performanc­e Laboratory at the University of Lethbridge. The PD & Boxing Program will start in mid-September.

• The annual Whoop-Up Days Carnival, sponsored by Lethbridge Orthotic-Prosthetic Services Ltd. and Shoe Solutions, will be held Aug. 22 from 9-11 a.m. at the parking lot at 542 13 St. N. (along parade route). Free fun for the whole family — bouncy castle, obstacle course, mechanical calf roping, popcorn, face painting, show cones and more. • A Herb Drying and Tea Making Workshop will be held at the Interfaith Food Bank’s Learning Garden, with instructor Mandy Sandbach. • The inaugural Lethbridge Lightning Golf Tournament will take place Aug. 26 starting at 1 p.m. at Picture Butte Golf and Winter Club. Entry fee $125 for individual­s, $500 for team of four. Featuring 18 holes of golf (Texas Scramble format), silent auction and steak dinner. $1,000 first-place team prize, $600 for second place, $400 for third place. • The Lethbridge Host Lions’ 11th Annual Pig & Pumpkin Family Festival will be held Sept. 16 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at Broxburn Vegetables & Café (5 km east of Lethbridge and 1 km south of Highway 3 on Broxburn Road). Featuring children's carnival games, hay rides, bouncy tents, fish pond, face painting and glitter tattoos, pumpkin cannon, bubble balls, baby pigs, food booth, antique car show and entertainm­ent. • Interfaith Food Bank will conduct another round of free FoodFit classes starting in September, running Mondays or Wednesdays (both day and evening options available). FoodFit brings community members together to set goals, learn skills, and make measurable changes in overall health and fitness.
