Score four for the Kodiaks
The Lethbridge College Kodiaks women’s soccer team is off and running with a four-point weekend. Wrapping up their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference season-opening and home-opening weekend, the Kodiaks blanked the Lakeland College Rustlers 3-0 Sunday afternoon at the Servus Sports Centre.
After a gutsy 0-0 deadlock with the Red Deer Queens Saturday afternoon that earned them a point, the Kodiaks found the back of the net in Sunday’s weekend capper as Vicki Noronha scored twice to pace Lethbridge to a 2-0 lead before Brooklyn Bellavance rounded out the scoring to put the Kodiaks at 1-01 to start the season.
“It’s fantastics for this group of girls,” said Kodiaks head coach Sean Carey. “They’re a great group to be around and they have so much fun and it shows on the field. They just work hard and they got what they deserved today. They dominated that game and that’s a real confidence booster for the weekend. I’m so excited to see when they can go. Every week at practice they just elevate and push each other. They’re just great to be around.”
After being held off the scoresheet in Saturday’s game, the Kodiaks hit the scoresheet on Noronha’s first goal of the game at the 15-minute mark with a shot off the crossbar and in.
However, the celebration on the Kodiaks first snipe of the season was put on hold for a minute as officials reviewed the play to make sure the ball had crossed the goal line before ruling it a goal.
Noronha added her second of the game just before the 47-minute mark and Bellavance added a little insurance for the Kodiaks.
At the other end, Brittany Klein turned aside all seven shots she faced for back-to-back shutouts.
“We had a much stronger start today, which helped,” said fourth year Kodiak midfielder Kaylin Snodgrass. “We got a little scrambly in the middle and some of our legs got worn out, but I thought we kept at it and kept getting more goals, which helped calm the defence.”
It also landed them a four-point weekend.
“It was a great start, I think everybody was happy with it,” said Snodgrass. “Our effort was pretty high and we knew we had to come out strong for the opening weekend. Starting with two home games it was huge to get four big points. To tie Red Deer was a big deal, so we’re pretty excited.”
The Kodiaks now take it on the road when they head to Medicine Hat on Saturday to face the Rattlers.
