Broncos edge the Hurricanes

- LETHBRIDGE HERALD

The Lethbridge Hurricanes fell just short of a road win Sunday night.

The Canes were edged 3-2 by the Swift Current Broncos during Western Hockey League preseason action in Swift Current.

Hurricanes forward Jadon Joseph scored midway through the third period to cut the Broncos lead to 3-2, but the visitors didn’t get any closer as Swift Current hung on for the win. With the loss the Hurricanes are 1-3 during the exhibition season.

On Sunday, the Broncos were first on the sheet when Arthur Miller scored on the man advantage eight minutes in for his first of two on the night.

Lethbridge pulled even with 6:42 left in the first on Hayden Clayton’s first of the preason, but the Broncos pulled ahead before the first intermission on a goal from Ethan Regnier.

Miller added his second of the game for the sole goal of the second before Joseph made for a close finish with his first exhibition goal at the 9:13 mark of the third.

Bryan Thomson — the Hurricanes second round pick in this year’s WHL Bantam Draft — got the start, kicking out 21 of 24 shots playing down the road from his home town in Moose Jaw.

The Hurricanes outshot the Broncos 40-24 and went 1-for-7 on the powerplay, while the Broncos were 1-for-6.

The Canes head to the Crowsnest Pass Friday night when they take on the Kootenay Ice in their final preseason game.

The Hurricanes open their 2017-18 WHL regular season Sept. 22 when they host the Medicine Hat Tigers at 7 p.m. at the Enmax Centre.
