Full weekend of live racing at the RMTC
This weekend RMTC returns to three days of live racing going tonight at 6 p.m. with six races on the card, and Saturday and Sunday at 1:15 p.m. with eight races on the card each day.
This weekend is geared for excitement with quarter-horse stakes action on Sunday. The first stakes race is the Derby Division 1 with a full field of eight horses. Two of the horses to watch in this race are Janice Sather’s Tac It Perry and Allen Goodsell’s Heza Riot. The second quarter-horse stakes race is the AQHA Aged, highlighting horses such as William Leech’s Toughie and Go Jessin Beaver, along with Donalda Cochrane’s E.R. CAFE.
Not to be left out, the thoroughbreds feature the second leg of the starter allowance series going a distance of one and one-eighth miles. Standouts in this race will be Pete Dubois’ Blazing Temper and Norm Cuthbertson’s Year of the Ma.
Three of the top jockeys in Alberta’s Community circuit continue their battle for supremacy. Jose Rocha was leading rider at RMTC in the spring and fall meet of 2016; while this year, Scott Sterr was leading rider in the spring meet and Blandford Steward took home top honours in Grande Prairie. Stewart is currently leading rider in the fall meet at RMTC with Sterr and Rocha not that far behind.
Pound for pound, jockeys are the best fit athletes in any sport. Imagine balancing on your toes and riding a horse at speeds upwards of 30 miles an hour, just to get some perspective on what it is these folks do for a living. It truly is the extreme sport of speed and finesse, and none do it better than the three aforementioned riders.
As always, there will be all kinds of family fun activities, featuring the now famous candy scramble conducted by Rose Rossi. See you at the races.
