Fire threat easing in Waterton park

- Tijana Martin LETHBRIDGE HERALD

Parks Canada announced the Kenow fire in Waterton park has remained active and continues to be classified as out of control late Sunday morning.

However, the fire has not shown any growth and estimates remain around 36,000 hectares.

The fire activity is primarily on the fire perimeter as well as at localized hotspots

Parks Canada is currently focusing on protecting value and infrastructure, establishing a containment within strategic locations, assessing impacted values and infrastructure while restoring key infrastructure in preparation for re-entry.

Currently no one is permitted into Waterton park except emergency and authorized personnel.

Parks Canada continues to work towards a detailed assessment to help address hazards throughout the park such as danger trees and rock falls as a result of the high intensity of the fire.

While the townsite does not appear to be under threat, precaution must be used as the active fire is nearby and ongoing.

The Castle Branch fire suppression within the Castle drainage continues to see minimal activity. Clear skies on Saturday allowed aircrafts to help with suppression and assessment, and ground crews were also deployed.

The fire is approximately 23 kilometres from Castle Mountain Resort and 30 kilometres from Beaver Mines and remains at 500 hectares in size.
