Pronghorns mens soccer team battles it out in western road jaunt

- Dale Woodard LETHBRIDGE HERALD

The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men’s soccer team were held winless during their western road trip on the weekend.

The Pronghorns were defeated 3-1 by the Thompson Rivers WolfPack during Canada West play Sunday afternoon in Kamloops to fall to 1-52 on the season.

The loss caps off an 0-2 road trip following a 5-1 loss to the Trinity Western University Spartans Friday night in Langley, but given the Horns roster numbers and a demanding schedule over the last two weeks, Horns head coach Randy Bardock credited his team for a solid outing.

“I loved our attitude and our effort today, it was fantastic,” said Bardock. “We changed our system and did a lot of things we need to be better at, we showed that today. We countered very well. We need to execute a bit better in the attacking third, but the opportunities were there to get something from the game. Unfortunately we got a red card at 54 minutes (to Sean Gaiesky) and that kind of changed the tone of the game moving forward. But the guys battled right to the end. It was great to see.

“We’ve only had one full practice in the last two weeks and a boatload of injuries and it was great to see how they performed today.”

Dominique Point du Jour scored the lone Pronghorns goal Sunday, while goaltender Nolan French was kept busy with nine saves.

After playing three of their four regular season weekends on the road, the Pronghorns come back to the University of Lethbridge for a four-game homestand, starting Saturday against the University of Fraser Valley Cascades and Sunday when the UNBC Timberwolves roll into town.

That’ll give the Horns the chance for some proper preparation this week.

“There were a lot of positives to take from today,” said Bardock. “We have our first full week of practice in a month and it’ll give us chance to be able to fine-tune somethings and really get moving forward.”
