Citizen Walk About set for Sept. 27

EVENT TO PUT SPOTLIGHT ON DISABILITY ISSUES

Persons with disabilities and community members alike are preparing to take to the streets of Lethbridge to shed light on key issues and promote equality.

The South Region Self Advocacy Network (SRSAN) will host its eighth annual Citizen Walk About Sept. 27.

SRSAN is a group of more than 100 people with the mission to be a united voice for people with different abilities which brings inspiration and opportunity to achieve. The event will be hosted in partnership with the Southern Alberta Individualized Planning Association (SAIPA), which provides resources and support to SRSAN.

Under the theme, “The Disability Rights Movement Across Canada,” the event will centre on the progression of disability rights across the country in the past 150 years. A special display will detail progression in the country as a whole, while highlighting important milestones in each province and territory.

“As people with disabilities, we are proud of who we are,” Gwen Rowley, a self-advocate who is part of the event planning committee, said in a news release. “It is important to raise awareness about the journey toward equality and the idea that people with disabilities are valued, contributing citizens.”

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., festivities will begin at Lethbridge City Hall with attendance from local officials such as Lethbridge East MLA Maria Fitzpatrick. Citizens will then depart city hall and begin the walk to Galt Gardens, carrying signs with key messages important to creating a more inclusive community.

Prior to leaving city hall, and following the group’s arrival at Galt Gardens, key community figures, including CTV anchor Dory Rossiter, will speak on the importance of disability rights.

In addition, SRSAN will host a barbecue and talent show in the park. Acts include singing, dancing, rapping and art displays. All proceeds will support SRSAN and advocacy initiatives.
