Thurber believes his working background would be an asset on Lethbridge City Council

Bruce Thurber believes his background working for cities, and in cities, as well as a focus on careful spending and customer service would an asset to Lethbridge City Council.

He currently runs his own engineering company and says he’s ready to “hunker down and work” if he’s elected.

“Because you’re working for 100,000 people,” said Thurber, 52, who is one of 29 candidates vying for eight council seats come the Oct. 16 municipal election.

“Now is the time. I’ve got enough experience in industry where I’ve spent half a career in the public sector and half a career in the private sector. When I look at Lethbridge and the growth we’re going through, and the challenges we’re facing in all three areas, all the issues, I think it’s a wonderful time to have an engineer as part of the makeup of council. I think that skill set that I bring forward would really help out.”

Thurber has lived in Lethbridge for 15 years, is a member of the Municipal Planning Commission, and says he has knowledge of how adminstration and councils function, as well as the format within the Municipal Government Act.

He has interests in dealing with social housing and addictions, spending on capital projects, and is an “advocate for transportation infrastructure.” Thurber said he would like to see a third bridge funding structure through “value engineering” and that it should be considered for safety reasons.

He also wants transit fees and service to be affordable and accessible to seniors and students.

“We need to be fiscally prudent, fiscally responsible, and make sure we are stretching our dollars as much as we can,” Thurber said. “We need to really manage how we are spending that money. It’s not my money, it’s everybody’s taxpayers’ money, so we’ve got to be very vigilant.”

Thurber, if elected, said he’s ready to collaborate on council and realized things take time and effort on many levels.

“I want to see a diverse council,” he said. “You need a very good, functioning council and mayor to move things forward. I welcome healthy debate.”
