The United Way of Lethbridge and South West Alberta kicked off its 76th annual fundraising campaign on Thursday at city hall.

The event included speeches, a flag raising, and a $20,000 donation from the Lethbridge Kinsmen Foundation towards the Ready, Set, Go! program which assists low-income families with school supplies and clothing.

The local United Way was able to distribute $200,000 last year to 22 different organizations focused on youth, alleviating poverty, and building healthy and strong communities.

After a year of rebuilding and transition, Maureen Burke, chair of the board of directors, said she is looking forward to improving again this year. She acknowledged the staff and outgoing executive director Trudy Carrels for their hard work and dedication. She also expressed gratitude for the work of interim executive director Rachel Foster.

“We’ve been able to release more monies this year and we’re building that to happen in an even bigger way next year,” said Burke.

The United Way is the funnelling point for many organizations. They have a tie with every local non-profit organization, and they know what is needed most and where, she explained.

Even though last year was a struggle to reach their goals, the community came through. The United Way is able to give out an additional $75,000 in 2017-18, she said.

“We’ve had a lot of support,” said Burke, referring to both the community and the non-profits. When the United Way wasn’t able to fund organizations as much as in previous years, they understood and still supported the United Way, she said.

They hope to beat last year’s goal and raise at least $225,000 this campaign to make sure the most urgent needs of the community are met.

“People need so much help,” she said. “I know people get tired of being asked for monies. We have so many areas that I don’t think the average person understands we need help in these areas, especially with children.”

Donating to the United Way can be done through the workplace, online or at one of their events.

“It’s so easy to even have just a couple dollars taken off your cheque every month,” said Burke. “It all adds up and makes a huge difference for us.”
