Horns soccer at home this weekend

- LETHBRIDGE HERALD

Coming off a key victory to end last weekend’s homestand, the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men’s soccer team continues their post season push with two more home games this weekend.

The Horns (2-6-2) host a pair of Edmonton teams, starting today at 2 p.m. when the Alberta Golden Bears pay a visit to the University of Lethbridge Stadium.

On Sunday, the Pronghorns will face the MacEwan Griffins at 2:15 p.m. at the U of L Stadium.

On the women’s side, the Pronghorns are also at home this weekend.

The 2-3-1 Horns host the Winnipeg Wesmen on Saturday and the Manitoba Bisons Sunday. Both games are at noon at the U of L Stadium.

The Pronghorn men ended a three-game losing skid Sunday with a 1-0 win over the UNBC Timberwolves, but still trail the Calgary Dinos in winning percentage for the final playoff spot in the Prairie Division.

The Dinos and Mount Royal Cougars, who are in third, both have two games in hand on the Pronghorns and face each other this weekend in a home-and-home series.

Following his winning goal on Sunday from a penalty spot, Dominique Point du Jour leads the Horns with three goals and is tied for the team lead in points with Stephen Primeau with five.

Both Primeau and Ellis Davies each have two goals to sit second the Pronghorns in goals.

The Golden Bears (6-1-1) come to town as the defending U SPORTS champion and are the topranked team in the country, but the Bears suffered their first loss of the season last Saturday, losing 2-0 to the visiting Trinity Western Spartans.

The only other point a team has taken from the Bears this season was the Pronghorns in a 1-1 tie in Edmonton.

Sunday the Pronghorns take on the Griffins (1-6-1), who sit sixth in the Prairie Division. The Pronghorns beat the Griffins in Edmonton earlier this season, 2-1.

Both games are at the University Community Stadium and will be webcast on

On the women’s side, the Pronghorns head into the weekend fresh off a 1-1 run through Saskatchewan that ended with a 2-1 win over the Regina Cougars.

Thanks to that win, the Pronghorns hold onto fifth place in the Prairie Division with seven points, one back of the Calgary Dinos and three up on the Bisons.

Lethbridge’s Lindsay Amatto leads the Pronghorns with three goals this season. Kayla Blacquiere and Nikki Furukawa have two each.

Amatto and Blacquiere are also tied for 11th in the league in shots on goal with 11.

Pronghorns goaltender Micaela Stone is fifth in the Canada West in saves per game at 5.67 and ninth in save percentage at .829.
