Indian Relay Races show their stuff this weekend at RMTC
The extreme sport of horse racing is coming to Rocky Mountain Turf Club Saturday and Sunday. The Canadian Indian Relay Racing Association will be staging the first ever Canadian Championships.
The top 12 teams have qualified through six CIRRAsanctioned events and have competed for over $50,000 in its first season. Each event has seen a record number of teams entered from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Montana, setting new records in attendance with each event. This will be the first time a relay event will be held in Lethbridge at Rocky Mountain Turf Club.
The popularity of Indian relay is growing in Canada at a phenomenal rate with more people becoming fans of this extreme sport. A growing number of teams from almost every tribe in both Alberta and Saskatchewan are performing every week and the level of competition increases with each race. The events will begin at 1 p.m., with live racing following immediately after, at 3:25 p.m.
This weekend there are three days of live racing with post time tonight being 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday will be at 3:25 p.m., immediately after the Indian Relay Races are completed. There are six great live races per day with the highlight being the third leg of the Starter Allowance Series running on Sunday, at a distance of a mile and three 16ths. Winners of the first two legs were the Pete Dubois-trained Blazing Temper and the Norm Cuthbertsontrained Year of the Ma. Winnipeg invader Pacific Tsunami will try and knock off the two past winners. It should be a tremendous race.
And as always, in addition to great live racing action, there will be a number of family-friendly events from the playground to the candy scramble. See you at the races.
