Horns men rally in OT

- LETHBRIDGE HERALD

It took a little extra time, but the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns mens’ hockey team has earned a 1-1 weekend to kick off their Canada West season.

Horns veteran Mitchell Maxwell scored 2:56 into the second overtime as Lethbridge topped the Calgary Dinos 2-1 Saturday night at Nicholas Sheran Arena.

The win comes one night after the Horns saw a 1-0 lead after two periods disappear when the Dinos struck for four third period goals and a 4-1 win Friday night in Calgary.

But on Saturday, there was no third period comeback even though the Dinos forced overtime with 52 seconds left in regulation when former Lethbridge Hurricane Riley Sheen scored the equalizer. Coaldale’s Adam Kambeitz drew an assist on the goal.

The Pronghorns held a 1-0 lead after the first period on a goal from Justin Valentino.

It stayed that way until the 19:08 mark of the the third when Sheen forced overtime and denied Pronghorns goaltender Garret Hughson the shutout.

But after the first overtime session didn’t produce a winner, Maxwell capped it off midway through the second overtime.

Hughson made 37 saves in the victory.

In the women’s game in Calgary, the Pronghorns were dealt a 1-0 loss after defeating the Dinos by that same score in double overtime Friday night at Nicholas Sheran Arena.

Calgary scored 5:23 into the second on a goal from Kate Lumley for all the offence the hosts would need.

Horns goaltender Alicia Anderson made 22 saves in the loss.

The Pronghorns men’s team heads east this coming weekend when they head to Saskatoon to tangle with the Huskies Friday and Saturday.

The Horns women are at home next weekend when the Huskies pay a visit to Nicholas Sheran Arena Friday and Saturday. Game time both nights is 7 p.m.
