Golden Hawks take flight on the road
The Lethbridge Val Matteotti bantam AAA Golden Hawks have tacked on couple early-season wins following an 2-0 road trip.
The Golden Hawks keyed a third period rally with five goals in a span of 4:01 to down the Lloydminster Bobcats 9-5 during Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League action Sunday afternoon in Lloydminster.
The Golden Hawks trailed 5-3 after two periods before lighting up the Bobcats with six third-period goals on their way to the win as Conner Furukawa scored four goals and added an assist.
The win improves the Golden Hawks to 5-2-1 on the season — good for first place in the Ram South Division — and wraps up an undefeated northern road swing following a 5-2 win over the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers Saturday.
On Sunday, Cole Larocque scored Lethbridge’s first-period goal as the teams skated into the first intermission tied at 1-1.
Furukawa scored his first of four in the second period and Logan Christie added another for the Golden Hawks, but Lloydminster struck for four third-period goals for a 5-3 lead after 40 minutes.
Joel Mabin key the third-period comeback for the Golden Hawks, scoring 1:27 into the third to make it 5-4 before Furukawa scored the equalizer and the go-ahead goal 1:07 apart to complete his hat trick bid and put Lethbridge up 6-5.
Larocque added his second of the game for a 7-5 lead and Nolan Price put the Golden Hawks up by three.
Furukawa added his fourth of the game with 4:13 to go to round out the scoring.
Brody Tallman, Syprus Ives and Carson Haynes each had two assists, while Erick Roest made 17 saves in the win.
The Golden Hawks are back home this weekend, starting with the Red Deer Rebels paying a visit to Nicholas Sheran Arena Saturday at 3 p.m.
Lethbridge is back at Nicholas Sheran Arena Sunday as they host the Camrose Red Wings at noon.
