Grand finale at Rocky Mountain Turf Club doesn’t disappoint

-

The final weekend of live horse racing at the Rocky Mountain Turf Club has come to a reality and you will be left with a bang. There will be 11 live races both Saturday and Sunday, with post time at 1:15 p.m. The best of the best are coming out to play this weekend.

On Saturday, race eight will feature the Rufus Goodstriker Memorial, going a distance of a mile and an eighth. With a field of seven, it will be very competitive with horses such as Les Adams' Paiges Peak, Danny Oberholtzer’s Bull Time and Bob Gwilliam's Again and Gone, who will be running his last lifetime race in this one.

On Sunday, a full field of eight will be competing in the Farewell Sprint Stakes Race. Lyle Magnuson's General Day will definitely be the horse to beat in this one, with Pete Dubois' classy veteran, Dubla Gold, in the hunt as well.

Probably the most exciting race of the day will be the Farewell Stakes going a distance of seven furlongs. Nellie Pigeau will be sending out the always tough, Why Not Live, while Magnuson sends out River District and Jim Depew will give Metro Dreamer a shot in this one. Guaranteed to be exciting and competive.

The jockey colony at Rocky Mountain Turf Club has been superb this year. Three Jamaican-born riders are leaving their mark on the track. Andrew Wright now rides at R.M.T.C. full time, while two Saskatoon jockeys have come in to show their wares this fall. Carlton Malcom is making his first visit to Lethbridge.

Veteran rider Neville Stephenson, who always comes here in the fall, is having an outstanding meet and shows off his exceptional riding skills in every race he's involved in.

As always, there are plenty of family-friendly activities such as the petting zoo, playground and candy scramble. This weekend promises to be one of the best of the year and it’s a good thing, because this will have to hold us until next spring.

See you at the races.
