One big weekend for Wilson

- Dale Woodard LETHBRIDGE HERALD

With a four-goal outing, Wilson Ntignee had already made a solid case for himself as the Lethbridge College Kodiaks nominee for Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week.

Following the Kodiaks 3-1 win over the Red Deer Kings Sunday afternoon in Red Deer, the forward for the men’s soccer team threw in another stat that should only help his cause for the award.

With the Kodiaks leading 3-1 late in the game — and with Ntignee having provided two of those goals — Kodiaks goaltender Kohl Wandyka was red carded after bringing down a Kings player.

After spending the weekend putting the ball in the other team’s goal, Ntignee was recruited to keep the ball out of the Kodiaks goal as head coach Sean Carey tapped him to stand in for the ensuing penalty shot.

On the ensuing chance, Ntignee dove to his right to deny the chance and keep the score 3-1, much to the joy of the Kodiaks women’s team watching intently from the sidelines.

Peter Ntignee provided the other Kodiaks goal.

With the win the Kodiaks — who locked up a playoff spot Saturday thanks to their 4-1 win over the Lakeland College Rustlers in Lloydminster — improve to 5-1-2 on the season, good for second in the ACAC South Division, one point up on the Medicine Hat Rattlers.

On the women’s side, another solid effort didn’t result in the win as the Kodiaks were edged 1-0 by the Queens to sit at 25-1 on the season.

“You feel bad for the girls,” said Carey. “We had so many scoring chances, it was another great effort from the girls.”

Injuries rocked the Kodiaks women on the road trip.

Leading scorer Vicki Noronha — who had five shots in Saturday’s 2-1 loss to the Rustlers — was lost for the season in the Lloydminster game.

On Sunday in Red Deer, the Kodiaks then lost Madison Folk to injury.

But as they head into the final weekend, Carey noted the progress of the women’s team.

“They understand how far we’ve come and what they’ve achieved.”

Kodiaks goaltender Brittany Klein made 10 saves in Sunday’s loss.
