Pronghorns wrap up regular season with a win at home

WOMEN’S SOCCER TEAM HEADING TO LANGLEY FOR CANADA WEST PLAY-IN GAME AGAINST FRASER VALLEY

-

As they get set for the second season, the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s soccer team wrapped up its regular season with a win.

The Horns blanked the Mount Royal Cougars 2-0 during the final day of Canada West regular season action Sunday afternoon at the University of Lethbridge Stadium.

With the win, the Pronghorns finish the regular season at 5-7-2 record and in fourth place and head to the post-season for the second time in three seasons.

The Pronghorns will travel to Langley to face the Fraser Valley Cascades in the Canada West women's soccer play-in game Thursday. The winner of that game will face the Trinity Western Spartans in the quarter-final Saturday.

Nikki Furukawa struck first for Lethbridge with her fourth of the season 14 minutes in.

Kayla Blacquiere added the second Pronghorns goal early in the second half to round out the scoring. Blacquiere drew an assist on Furukawa’s goal and Furukawa had the helper on Blacquiere’s goal as both veterans posted a two-point afternoon.

In goal, Micaela Stone turned aside all eight shots that came her way.

In addition to Furukawa, Blacquiere and Stone playing their final home games as a Pronghorn, Raeleen Vanden Dungen also played her final home game, while Jesse Dueck will also graduate after this season and missed Sunday’s game due to injury.

The Pronghorns beat the Cascades 5-0 earlier this season in Lethbridge and battled the topseeded Spartans to a 2-0 loss.

Thursday’s game against the Cascades is at 8 p.m. local time.
