Winless weekend for Copperheads
The Coaldale Copperheads went winless during Heritage Junior Hockey League play last weekend.
The Copperheads were handed a 9-3 loss by the Cochrane Generals Saturday night at the Coaldale Sportsplex and were topped 5-2 by the Blackfalds Wranglers Sunday afternoon.
With the losses, the Copperheads drop to 7-5 and into second place in the Southern Division, two points behind the Okotoks Bisons.
Hosting their annual Pink in the Rink Cancer Fundraiser Saturday against the Generals, the Copperheads allowed five second-period goals as Cochrane scored some payback following a 61 loss to Coaldale the weekend before.
Mitchell Konschuk, Riese Nevil and Jayden Smith were the Copperheads goal scorers.
Konschuk added an assist for a two-point night.
Andrew Suriano stopped 19 of 24 shots before Nolan Berner came in halfway through the second, stopping 13 shots the rest of the way.
The second period proved costly as well on Sunday in Blackfalds as the Wranglers struck for four goals.
Cody Riehl gave Coaldale a 1-0 lead after the first period and Smith added the other Copperheads goal in the third. Berner made 32 saves in the loss. The Copperheads return to the Coaldale Sportsplex Saturday when the defending champion Red Deer Vipers (7-3-0) pay a visit at 8:30 p.m.
On Sunday, the Copperheads head to Cochrane for their third meeting with the Generals in as many weeks.
