Scholarship to help U of L students set sail for a semester
Brawn Family Foundation announces scholarship
The University of Lethbridge announced an exciting new scholarship that could give students the experience of the a lifetime. To kick off International Education Week, U of L president Mike Mahon announced Monday that each year, the Brawn Family Foundation will provide a scholarship to one second-year undergraduate student to take part in the Semester at Sea program.
The semester-long program provides students the opportunity to learn aboard a travelling ship while visiting up to 15 countries.
Students will earn between 12 to 15 transferable credits from Colorado State University from courses geared to the itinerary.
Robert Brawn, the director of the Brawn Family Foundation, knows just how beneficial the Semester at Sea program can be.
“Two of my children have gone on the program and three of my grandchildren and they have all come back with a much more worldly experience,” he said.
But not all students can afford the costs associated with a semester at sea.
Tuition, along with room and board, is priced at $24,555 USD for the Spring 2018 Voyage.
That price does not reflect airfare, textbooks, in-country travel, personal spending and incidental fees.
Brawn confirmed the foundation endowed a $30,000 scholarship for one student every semester to help cover most of the costs.
“It is a worthwhile experience for us, we appreciate the students,” he said.
“This is a chance for us to give back to students that experience. I think it’s an opportunity for them to develop skills that they wouldn’t have just staying at a university.”
Applications for the first U of L Brawn Family Foundation scholarship are being accepted.
Applicants must be accepted into the Semester at Sea Program, have completed 10 courses and hold a minimum GPA of 2.75.
