Kodiak volleyball teams look to stay on a roll

- LETHBRIDGE HERALD

The Lethbridge College Kodiaks men’s and women’s volleyball teams look to continue their strong starts to the season on home court tonight.

Coming off 2-0 weekends in Olds over the Broncos, the Kodiaks are back at the Val Matteotti Gym tonight as they host the SAIT Trojans in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference play.

In sole possession of first place in the South Division at 6-2, the Kodiak women look to expand on that lead as the 4-2 Trojans roll into town tonight before the series heads back to Calgary Saturday night.

On the men’s side, tonight’s game is a battle for second place as the 5-3 Kodiaks host the 5-1 Trojans. Heading into tonight the two teams are also tied with the 5-3 Red Deer Kings for second in the south.

With last weekend’s 2-0 showing in Olds, the Kodiak women have matched their win total from last season and will now face the Trojans — ranked fourth nationally.

Kodiaks veteran left side hitter Kristine Ward is fourth in the conference in kills per set (3.33).

The Kodiak men will also have their hands full with SAIT, ranked second in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association rankings.

Lethbridge comes into the weekend on a three-game winning streak.

They are led by third-year veteran Carter Hansen who leads the ACAC in kills with 105. Dax Whitehead is tops in the conference in hitting percentage (.398).

Tonight’s games will also double as Junior and Senior High School Appreciation Night.

All junior and senior high school students and their chaperones can attend the Kodiaks volleyball games against SAIT for free as well as attend a free barbecue, and have the opportunity to win prizes, including one of four Kodiaks summer sports camp passes.

Tonight’s games will be the final home game appearance for the Kodiaks until January.
