Team Lethbridge makes its case on visit to Edmonton

- Nick Kuhl LETHBRIDGE HERALD

After two days spent meeting with provincial cabinet members, government officials and MLAs in Edmonton, Team Lethbridge returned to the city Thursday afternoon.

The group was in the provincial capital to raise awareness about how the city contributes to the province and to identify opportunities for collaboration and discuss economic diversification, partnerships with Indigenous communities, healthy environments, improved public health care and quality education.

Trevor Lewington, Economic Development Lethbridge CEO said, these visits are good opportunities to discuss government priorities and how Lethbridge fits into the vision for the province.

“We had a high level of engagement from ministries and got to showcase how well Lethbridge works together,” Lewington said in a release.

“It’s clear that they view our level of collaboration here as a model for the rest of the province,” said Alberta Premier Rachel Notley in a video message to the team.

“Team Lethbridge recognizes the success of our province depends on the success of our communities. It also recognizes the strength diversity brings to the equation which is why Team Lethbridge is a choir of voices from all over the community.”

“It’s always an exciting time when Team Lethbridge visits the Legislature,” said Shannon Phillips, Lethbridge West MLA, in a release.

The city of Lethbridge is a thriving growing economic centre, with over a billion dollars in new investments, and a highly engaged community. As the local minister noted, this is a great demonstration that our government is working to make life better for Albertans.”

“As a team they speak with one voice to form a partnership with the province to make life better for Lethbridgeans and all Albertans,” added Maria Fitzpatrick, MLA for Lethbridge East.

“Municipalities and organizations don’t work independently, we work collaboratively,” said Mayor Chris Spearman.

“We recognize that the provincial government is a partner, and that when we implement policy locally, the provincial government is often a partner. With each of the meetings that we’re having, with each of the ministers were letting them know how their programs are working in Lethbridge.”

Team Lethbridge is composed of community leaders from 19 local organizations committed to fostering a positive, collaborative relationship with the province through communication and engagement. This was the fifth Team Lethbridge delegation to visit Edmonton since 2008.
