Broncos blank Canes

The Lethbridge Hurricanes have started their road trip on a losing note. The Canes were blanked 60 by the Swift Current Broncos during Western Hockey League action Saturday night in Swift Current.

The loss drops the Hurricanes to 7-10-1-0 on the season and extends the team’s losing streak to six games.

On Saturday, the Broncos top trio of Tyler Steenberge­n Aleksi Heponiemi and Glenn Gawdin combined for 11 points as Steenberge­n had two goals and two assists, Heponiemi had one goal and three helpers and Gawdin chipped in with two goals and one assist. The trio sit in the top-three in league scoring with Steenberge­n and Heponiemi each at 46 points and Gawdin at 38.

The Broncos opened up a 3-0 lead after the first as Heponiemi scored 12 seconds in and Steenberge­n and Gawdin added power play goals.

Gawdin scored the lone goal of the second period. Kaden Elder scored in the third and Steenberge­n added his second of the game 3:30 in to round out the scoring.

Hurricanes goaltender Reece Klassen made 18 saves as the Hurricanes outshot the Broncos 36-24.

Logan Flodell earned the shutout for Swift Current as the Broncos power play went 3-for-4.

The Hurricanes begin their B.C. jaunt Friday night in Kelowna against the Rockets.

The trip also takes the Canes through Kamloops, Victoria, Vancouver and Kootenay before the team returns home to host the Portland Winterhawk­s Nov. 28.
