Kodiaks womens volleyball team keeps up their winning ways

- Dale Woodard LETHBRIDGE HERALD

The Lethbridge College Kodiaks women’s volleyball team has gotten a taste of winning, and they like it.

On Saturday, the Kodiaks sampled another win and a weekend sweep, topping the SAIT Trojans 3-0 (25-11, 25-20, 25-19) during Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference play.

The win improves the Kodiaks to 8-2 on the season and in sole possession of first place in the ACAC South Division.

“I was just discussing it with a parent today and I said we have a group of girls that have been here for three or four years that have set such a strong foundation for our newcomers,” said Kodiaks head coach Anna Schwark. “I think we’ve set the standard this year that we’re here to play volleyball and we want to win. It’s not that we’re scared of losing, it’s just we love winning and that’s just been the change. We’re working hard and are so competitive in practices. Our veterans have come in, are ready to play and they’re not taking anything from anybody. It’s just the standard our veterans have set.”

On Saturday, Laura Serafini paced Lethbridge with 11 kills, while Kristine Ward added nine.

Ashleigh Noel put up 12 digs and Reina Harta had 10.

Ward is in second in the league in kills with 126 and Harta is fourth in the league with digs with 114.

“It was great,” said Schwark of Saturday’s win. “I thought yesterday was good, we were pretty consistent and the mental strength was there, but today was even better, which I wasn’t sure I expected.

“I think SAIT has a great coach and a great team and I think they’re always consistent, so I expected them to make less errors and they stepped it up, but our girls stepped it up as well. It was really playing consistent defence and being really disciplined and being able to be mentally tough enough to say they’ll score their points and we’ll score ours.”

In the men’s game Saturday night, the Kodiaks lost 3-1 to SAIT. See Monday’s Herald.
