Horns rally for the win

Mike Hansen took one look at his team and knew the offence would catch up.

Turns out, the head coach of the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men’s basketball team was correct as the Horns downed the Mount Royal University Cougars 91-76 during Canada West play Saturday night in Calgary.

The win keeps the Pronghorns record unblemished at 6-0, but they had to play a little catch-up at the half to do it, rallying from a 45-36 deficit on their way to the win and the sweep of the home-and-home series following a wild 96-93 win Thursday night at the 1st Choice Savings Centre.

“We were down nine at the half and started the second half with a 9-0 run which sparked a 27-12 third quarter,” said Hansen, whose team is tied with the 6-0 Calgary Dinos and Albeta Golden Bears atop the Canada West standings. “That was the game right there. I knew the defence was solid. I just looked at the boys calmly at halftime, even though we were down, and said the defence was outstanding and the offence will catch up. And sure enough, it did. It was a really good effort by the guys.

Five Pronghorns hit double digits in Saturday’s win, including Thursday’s threepoint, buzzer- beating hero DeJon Burdeaux, who had 23 points and 12 rebounds along with two assists and five steals.

Kyle Peterson had 16 points, Colton Gibb had 15 and Saren Westrop and Zac Overwater had 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Awak Piom and Peterson also had three steals.

The Pronghorns look to stay undefeated this weekend when they travel to Kamloops to take on the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack (2-4) Friday and Saturday.

The Catholic Central Cougars boys and the LCI Clippers girls have emerged with this year’s Southern Alberta High School Volleyball League championship titles.

In the boys final Saturday at LCI, the Cougars defeated the host Rams 2-1 (25-16, 20-25, 15-10) to capture the gold medal.
