Undefeated records put on the line

PRONGHORN BASKETBALL TEAMS PLAY TRU IN KAMLOOPS

- LETHBRIDGE HERALD

University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men’s and women’s basketball teams will put their undefeated records on the line this weekend in Kamloops when they face the Thompson Rivers WolfPack.

Pronghorn men are one of three undefeated teams in Canada West. They tangle with the WolfPack tonight at 8 p.m. and Saturday at 7 p.m. pacific time. Both games will also be streamed live on

“TRU is the best passing team we will see this year,” said Pronghorn head coach Mike Hansen in a release. “We have to disrupt their flow and make them play at our pace if we want to have a chance to win this weekend.”

The Pronghorns haven’t faced Thompson Rivers since the 2013-14 season in Lethbridge, when the Pronghorns beat TRU 90-84. The last time the Pronghorns were in Kamloops, during the 2012-13 season the WolfPack beat the Pronghorns 90-81.

Pronghorns are tied with the Calgary Dinos and Alberta Golden Bears at 6-0 and enter the weekend with the top-ranked offence in Canada West. Through three weeks of the conference schedule, the Pronghorns are averaging 96.7 points per game.

Defensively, the Pronghorns are ranked 12th, allowing 82.3 points per game but sit third in Canada West rebounding with 41.5 rebounds per game.

Thompson Rivers (2-4) enters the weekend riding a three-game losing streak and were swept last weekend in Saskatoon by the Saskatchewan Huskies.

All five Pronghorn starters are averaging double digits in points but senior guard Dejon Burdeaux is the key. He is second in Canada West scoring with 24.2 points per game and also leads the Pronghorns with 8.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game.

Saren Westrop sits second on the Pronghorns with 15 points per game, while Zac Overwater and Kyle Peterson average 14.5 and 14.3 points respectively.

Meanwhile, the Pronghorn women (6-0) will tip off tonight at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 5 p.m. Pacific time with both games streamed live on

“We face a talented and challenging TRU team this weekend,” said Pronghorn head coach Dave Adams. “They score through nine different players and play with tremendous energy at both ends of the floor.”

The Pronghorns and WolfPack (4-2) haven’t faced each other in conference play since the 2013-14 season where Thompson Rivers beat the Pronghorns 66-64 in Lethbridge.

Statistically, the Horns are ranked fourth in Canada West in both team offence and defence. Through six games the Pronghorns are averaging 75 points per game, while allowing 62.2 points.

Zoe Dahl, Danielle Fritzke and Kacie Bosch lead the Pronghorns attack. Dahl is averaging 11.7 points, while Fritzke sits second with 11 points and is hitting on 51.4 per cent from behind the arc. Bosch is averaging 10.5 points per game, while also averaging 5.5 rebounds and three assists.

Katie Keith leads the Horns in rebounding with 7.7 boards per game to go along with 8.5 points.

The Pronghorns teams will be on the road again next weekend, travelling to Regina to face the Regina Cougars, before closing out the first semester at home against Fraser Valley Cascades the following weekend.
