Volleyball provincial­s served up

Day 1 of the Alberta Schools Athletic Associatio­n volleyball provincial­s took to the court across the province Thursday. In Medicine Hat, the 4A girls and boys pool play for playoff rankings took place.

In girls play, the South Zone 4A representa­tive Chinook Coyotes won their first two games, defeating Charles Spencer High 2-1 (19–25, 25– 20, 20–18) and Calgary St. Francis 2-1 (25–17, 18– 25, 15–13). At press time the Coyotes were playing Edmonton Strathcona High School.

On the boys side, the Catholic Central Cougars opened with a 2-0 loss to Calgary Dr. E.P. Scarlett (20–25, 13–25). The Cougars other two scores were unavailabl­e at press time.

At 3A boys provincial­s in Strathmore, the South Zone is represente­d by the LCI Rams and Magrath Zeniths.

The second-ranked Rams started with a 2-0 win (25–18, 25–23) over the second-seeded Strathcona Christian Academy Eagles on Thursday.

The 12-ranked Zeniths also got off to a winning start Thursday, defeating the fourthrank­ed Strathmore High Spartans 2-0 (25–20, 25– 22).

The Rams first game today is at 11:30 a.m. as they take on the Barrhead Griffins. They then face the H.J. Cody Lakers at 3:15 p.m. and the Cochrane Cobras at 5:45 p.m.

The Zeniths start today at 9 a.m. against the top-ranked Morinville Wolves and are back in action at 12:45 p.m. when they take on the St. Paul Saints. Magath finishes today’s play at 4:30 p.m. against the Louis St. Laurant Barons.

LCI also has a representa­tive at the 3A girls provincial­s in Sylvan Lake with Clippers on hand to represent the south. They are joined by Dunmore Eagle Butte.

The Clippers started play Thursday with a 2-0 win (25-15, 25-21) over Grande Prairie Peace Wapiti Academy, while Eagle Butte was defeated 2-0 (17-25, 16-25) by St. Joseph.

Both teams have three more games on the schedule today.

LCI starts against Camrose at 9 a.m. and plays Barrhead at 2 p.m. and Cochrane in the final draw at 7 p.m.

Eagle Butte starts today against Strathmore at 11:30 a.m. and plays Sylvan Lake H.J. Cody at 3:15 p.m. They cap the day off against Edmonton Christian at 5:45 p.m.

In Taber at St Mary’s school, a trio of South Zone teams will go for 2A boys gold this weekend with the Immanuel Christian Eagles, the host St. Mary’s and Picture Butte Sugar Kings in the 12-team field.

On Thursday, the Eagles kicked things off with a 2-1 win (25–19, 21–25, 15–11 win over Our Lady of Mount Pleasant Jr/Sr High, while St. Mary’s lost 2-0 (19–25, 23–25) to J.R.

Robson High.

On the opening day, the Sugar Kings lost 2-0 (13–25, 15– 25) to La Crete Public School.

The games continue today as Immanuel Christian plays J.R. Robson at 10:45 a.m., St. Mary’s at 12:45 p.m. and Strathcona Tweedsmuir at 4:30 p.m.

St. Mary’s plays Strathcona Tweedsmuir at 9 a.m. and Calgary Rundle College at 7 p.m. in addition to their game against the Eagles.

The Sugar Kings start their day at 11:30 a.m. against Parkland Composite. They then take on West Island College at 3:15 p.m. and Christ The King at 5:45 p.m.

The Vauxhall High Vi-Queens and the Magrath Pandas are the 2A girls reps at provincial­s in Fairview.

The Pandas are off to a 1-0

start following a 2-0 win (25– 23, 25–19) over host Fairview on Thursday.

The Vi-Queens are off to a 20 start to provincial­s. They began with a 2-0 win (25–17, 25–11 ) over the Strathcona Christian Academy Eagles and posted another 2-0 win (25–11, 25–13) win over Acme High.

The games continue today as the Pandas square off with the Onoway Mustangs and the Spirit River Renegades at 3:15 p.m. They finish the day at 5:45 p.m. against the Calgary Rundle College Cobras.

Vauxhall begins play today at 11:30 a.m. against the Vegreville Cougars. They continue at 2 p.m. when they play the G.P. Vanier Vipers.

The 1A boys provincial­s kicked off in Eckville with the Bow Island Senator Gershaw

Gators representi­ng the South Zone.

The south squad started action Thursday with a win, downing St. Thomas More High 2-0 (25–16, 25–11).

Senator Gershaw continues play today at 10:15 a.m. against Clear Water and 3:15 p.m. against Ecole Beausejour. They wrap up today’s play in the final draw at 8:15 p.m. against host Eckville.

In Bonnyville, the 1A girls provincial got underway and south rep Picture Butte Sugar Queens got things going on a winning note thanks to a 2-0 (25–16, 25–21) decision over Boyle High.

Action continues today starting at 9 a.m.
